Hurricane Prep

Florence, Sept. 10, 2018The Hurricane Season runs until November 30th, and right now we are in the peak time. With Hurricane Florence heading towards the East Coast, it is very important that you always keep an eye on the tropical weather outlook, and have your boat prepared to weather the Fall Storms that might come our way.

Please be aware that slip holders are responsible for securing their boats and personal property on marina premises.

Stingray Point Marina and staff are not responsible for taking care of your boat before or during a storm. If you will be away from the area, you need to arrange for a friend or local boat yard to prepare for and monitor your boat. And it is a good idea to have the boat prepared during the fall season, regardless of whether there is a storm lurking or not.

We have links on our website to a variety of sources for weather information, including a link to the National Hurricane Center, where you can monitor the storm path and timing forecasts. We will be monitoring the situation as well. Below are recommendations for preparing your boat for potential effects of a hurricane, whether it stays offshore or veers closer to us.

Recommended Procedures for Tropical Storms or Hurricanes

Tropical storms have sustained winds from 39 mph to 73 mph and hurricane-force winds start at sustained winds 74 mph. This can cause significant damage to boats that are improperly secured. Boat owners should take the following precautions well in advance of a storm’s projected arrival:

BOATS IN SLIPS

REDUCE WINDAGE:
Removing headsails (including furled jibs), mainsails, sail covers, biminis, dodgers and other canvas. For smaller storms, you can wrap sails with line to help secure them.
• Remove life rafts and other large objects that can catch wind.
• Flags should be lowered and stowed
• Halyards should be pulled away from the mast and snugged securely.
• Boats on the Dinghy Racks should be lashed down or removed and taken home.
DOCK LINES:
• Check for chafe and wear on dock lines and replace or double lines if necessary. Insert chafing gear in chocks if chocks wear substantially on dock lines.
• Please ensure that your lines can be adjusted from the dock. The bitter end needs to be on the dock, not on your boat. Most of these storms have significant storm surge with water going over the docks. We will NOT go aboard boats to adjust lines.
BOAT SYSTEMS:
• Check batteries for charge and charge if needed. Electricity to the docks may be lost or turned off if the storm surge is over the docks. Best not to leave food stored in the boat’s ice box.
• Disconnect your shore power cord from the dock.
• Bilge pumps should be on automatic.
• Close the fuel and all overboard sea cocks.
OTHER:
• Port lights and hatches should be securely closed in watertight conditions.
• It’s a good idea to remove contents from dock boxes to prevent damage due to flooding

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT TO SECURE YOUR BOAT– YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET TO YOUR BOAT.
Begin to implement your plan at the first forecast that the projected path includes Southern Chesapeake Bay, this will give you several days to execute your plan. The Hurricane Center website shows 3-5 day track forecasts.

In Hurricane Isabel and Irene, the storm surge was six to seven feet above mean high tide; waiting to the last minute is very risky. The docks, pilings, and some seawalls were all underwater. Boats left in slips that are not properly secured present a danger to themselves, to other boats and property, and to persons in the area. If your boat causes damage to another boat or to marina property, you may be held financially responsible. Also, when the winds get up toward hurricane strength it is impossible to adjust lines.

Boat Owner Identification: For owners planning to move their boat to upriver locations, authorities with VMRC and Middlesex County have requested that each boat have the boat owner’s name, vessel name, and contact information placed in a watertight plastic bag and placed somewhere easily accessible, such as unlocked cockpit locker or lazarett. This will allow them to contact the boat owner if needed after a storm.

HAUL OUT. If you want to be hauled out, contact your preferred yard early to ensure you get a spot. Check your insurance policy, many will pay for haul out expenses within a time range of our area being in the path of a named storm.

All Stingray Point Marina slip holders are advised to begin their storm preparations as soon as possible. Please be aware that slip holders, not Stingray Point Marina, are responsible for securing their boats and personal property on marina premises.

Although the exact track of this storm remains uncertain, the possibility that this storm will affect our area of the Chesapeake Bay is increasingly likely. All Stingray Point Marina slipholders are advised to begin their storm preparations as soon as possible. Today, Tuesday, the current forecast has the center of the storm near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on Friday morning at 8:00 am. It will be affecting the lower Chesapeake Bay at that time, and throughout the day. Likely make for a not very fun Fourth of July. We will be monitoring the situation as well. Below are recommendation for preparing your boat for potential tropical storms and hurricanes.

Keep in mind that hurricane-force winds start are sustained winds 74 mph. The maximum effects of a hurricane are usually felt within the right-front quadrant. Here the winds are usually the strongest, storm surge is highest, and the possibility of tornadoes is greatest. Begin to implement your plan at the first forecast that the projected path includes Southern Chesapeake Bay, this will give you several days to execute your plan.

In addition, Stingray Point Marina is subject to storm surge in a hurricane event. In Hurricane Isabel and Irene, the storm surge was six to seven feet above mean high tide; waiting to the last minute is very risky. The docks, pilings, and some seawalls were all underwater. Boats left in slips that are not properly secured and present a danger to themselves, to other boats and property, and to persons in the area. Additionally, you might want to remove contents from dock boxes, as they can become flooded during a storm surge, causing water damage to the contents.

After Hurricane Sandy

After Hurricane Sandy

Yes, Hurricane Sandy is gone. The Marina is all put back together with all electricity and water functioning. There is, of course, scattered debris from the winds and high tides. But, I am happy to say, all docks, finger piers and bulkheads are unscathed.  I would like to thank the wonderful people that walked the docks and adjusted dock lines with me during the storm. There was our fearless leader Jim Rogers (even when the docks were under water!), Tom, Bianca, Mac, Jim, Carl, Pete and Ulla all tirelessly tending our marina. Without these people I am not sure we would have faired as well. Thank you all! I would also like to thank Elizabeth our media guru who kept our website and Facebook page up to date with images and information so you all would know what was going on in our marina. Last, but not least, our wonderful Brent who tried time and again to send out my correspondence to you from his computer at home while working on accessing his office computer remotely. You may have received emails without pictures or several of the same emails, but he didn’t give up until he got it right! Teamwork, I love teamwork!

I do have a couple of business issues to discuss with you all. The first will be the fact that it is the slip holder’s responsibility to make sure that their boat is secure for any storm. If you are not able to get here and secure your boat, you should contact one of the many boat yards here in town and have them hired to do it. The marina is extremely busy preparing the marina for coming storms. We really do not have the time, nor want the liability in securing any  boats. It is extremely important that you make sure your boat is properly secured with lines that are the correct size and in good condition. This is not only important for the safety of your boat, but also the safety of the other boats in the marina. If you can not do this, please arrange to have your boat hauled. I do plan on conducting a seminar in the spring on how to properly secure your boat for a storm with the hope that it will help all of us!

The next subject has to do with allowing someone else to use your slip. On the lease that you signed for your slip, it states that you are not allowed to sublease your slip. Even though this is more a “lending” situation, it is still not allowed by the marina, especially with someone outside our marina. This is mostly from a liability stand point. This did occur during Sandy. Interesting, the only boat that had a sail come loose was the boat from another marina! There were three men trying to secure the sail in 35 knot wind and rain to protect the other boats around him. Please, if you would like to let a current slip holder in the marina “borrow” your slip, contact the office first. Otherwise, please do not offer your slip.

I would like to thank all of you for your kind words on Facebook as well as on our website. It really helped me to keep going and was greatly appreciated. If you haven’t visited either site recently, please do so and see some of the pictures that were taken during the storm.

Please try and make an effort to come back to the marina as soon as possible and untie any spider web lines running across the docks or slips. You may think I am twinkle toes, but if you saw me running around the docks today in these foul weather boots, you would definitely know that I am not!

We made it through another one! But will someone please turn the heat back on?!?!
